Children who read for enjoyment every day perform better in reading tests than those who don’t and also develop a larger vocabulary, increased general knowledge and understanding of other cultures. Reading for pleasure determines helps a child do better at school than their social or economic background.
As a parent you can make a difference! Parents are important educators in a child’s life, even more important than their teachers and it’s never too early to read together. Babies learn to recognize their parents voices. Reading to your baby from birth, even for just a little a day, gives them the comfort of hearing your voice and exposure to a language.
Reading is about listening and understanding. When hearing stories, children are exposed to a range of words. This helps them build their own vocabulary and their understanding when they listen. It’s important for children to understand how stories work. Even if they don’t understand every word, they’ll hear new sounds, words and phrases which they then try out, copying what they hear. As child starts to learn to read at school, you can play an important role in keeping them interested in books. What interests them? Help them to find books that are engaging and fun, spend time reading the books they bring home from school together.
